Preposition

A preposition is a word or group of words used before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to show direction, time, place, location, spatial relationships, or to introduce an object.
Some examples of prepositions are words like “in,” “at,” “on,” “of,” and “to.” Prepositions in English are highly idiomatic.

¶ Example-:
• He has been working for 5 hours.
• We have lived here since 1985.
• It has been raining since 8 o’clock.
• The children have been playing cricket for 2 hours.

1. As a rule no preposition is placed after the following verbs when these are used in active voice.

Stress, emphasise, discuss (matter), investigate, comprise, accompany, consider, violate, demand, resemble, pervade, precede, succeed, reach (at), resign (post), attack, invade, resist, enter (come into), eschew, befall, order, direct, join, sign, affect, ensure, board, describe, await, lack, regret,concern.
Example:-
¶ The police are investigating into the case.
¶ The teacher emphasised on
need of discipline in life.
¶ I have ordered for
his transfer.
¶ I shall discuss about
problem with you.
¶ Soni resembles with
her mother.

➯ To give reason

✹ Access + to
➯ अभिगम्यता,प्रबेश,तक पहुंच स्थापित करना
✹ I do not have access to a computer while I am not at home.
✹ Only Naina has access to this computer. Nobody else can
open it.
✹ Accede + to
➯To finally agree with someone, किसी की बात मान जाना
✹ The government acceded to demands of the industry and reduced the tax burden.
✹ Her husband acceded to her wishes and took her on a holiday.
✹ Concede + to
➯ To finally surrender
to the demands of someone grudgingly(अनिच्छा से)
✹ The manager concede to the demands of the striking workers.
✹ We both had different point of views and neither of us
conceded to the other.


Rules of Preposition:-

⋙ The pronoun after the preposition must be an objective pronoun.

Example-:
➯ The meeting was attended by her.
➯ The present was from him.
➯ She gave it to them.

⋙ A verb cannot become a prepositional object.

Example:-
➯ He prevented me from drink cold water. ❌
➯ He prevented me from drinking cold water.

➯ They are talented in hunt. ❌
➯ They are talented in hunting.

⋙ Verb placed after a preposition should be in gerund form.
➯ They are talented in hunting.

⋙ Verb placed after a preposition should be in gerund form.

Example:-
➯ Swimming is my hobby.
➯ Running is fun.
➯ The inspector walked into the building.
➯ She is interested in improving herself.
➯ Thery are talented in hunting
➯ She is good at solving problems.
➯ She is interested in working for us.

⋙ When object of the preposition is an interrogative pronoun takes end or front position.

Example:-
➯ What are you thinking of ?
➯ Who were you talking to ?
➯ By which bus did you come ?
➯ For whom was instructions given ?

B) since
       The preposition since is placed before words or phrases denoting a point of time(निश्चित समय); So since is the correct preposition to complete the sentence.
